Finally! The watch I have been eagerly anticipating has landed!
It was early March when I first saw a picture of the new Sinn release: the U1 DS Limited Edition. Limited to 500 pieces, that is, to the occasion of Sinn’s 60th anniversary. And, oh man, when I saw it I immediately knew that I wanted to add this timepiece to my collection.
Meanwhile, my collection within the collection comprises 4 Sinn watches. The first one I bought was after having watched an Urban Gentry video on this watch while looking for a nice everyday wearer. I decided to take the plunge and I must say I haven’t regretted that decision for a second. The watch runs at +1 steadily and is so versatile and a real strap monster.
The next Sinn watch that took up a position in my watch box was the UX. I find the technology of this watch so fascinating and I “needed” a grab-‘n-go watch. The UX wears comfortably and for the more than capable diver that it is, it is also relatively thin. And that black dial: deep, very deep black. It runs at less than +10 seconds. A year, that is.
When I sold my only chronograph I felt the collection needed a new one. First stop: Sinn HQ in Frankfurt. Obviously, not before I had done my homework on the watch. I love the rugged look and feel of the Sinn watches, so the decision wasn’t too hard. Enter the EZM13 Mission timer. Good thing I landed one last summer because this model has now been discontinued.
Since I would like to add something blue to the collection I started eying the Sinn 556 B(lue). And I was sure to pick that one up as soon as the travel restrictions due to the covid19 situation would be lifted. But then it was early march 2021. And Sinn decided to release a press photo of their Limited U1 DS. This was the watch I had been waiting for! Enter the U1 DS Limited Edition number 066/500.
Immediately after having checked out YouTube videos and reviews, I wrote to Sinn to ask them about the availability of certain favourite numbers. On top of the list was 66. The deal was made. Then the long wait started. I contacted Sinn a few times because I never heard from them. The last time I contacted Sinn customer service they didn’t give me good news. The wait could easily be extended by a few extra weeks, well into mid-June.
Fortunately, a couple of days ago I received an email: my watch was ready to be shipped. It arrived the next day and when I saw it live I was very pleasantly surprised. The watch looks even better in real life than in videos and pictures. The tegimented steel has a nice somewhat darker grey hue to it. Darker than the regular submarine steel in any case. The watch has a real heft on the wrist like that. With four links taken out, it comes in at 199 grammes.
I have never been a real fan of the original U1 colour scheme but this monochromatic look is wonderful. The U1 I had been after was the U1 Professional Arguably the best edition of all the editions Sinn has released of this model over the years. However, it has been impossible to find. With this DS I have absolutely nothing to complain about. It’s great! The unique dial is lovely and interesting at the same time. The “tool-tastic” look of the watch is spot on. The bracelet works and because of this colour scheme, this watch will take a good variation of straps.
After this, maybe unnecessary, long read now some pics. After some time I will provide an update on how it keeps time.
A box with a surprise:
Yes, it's the one I've been waiting for:
Close to the first look:
Anticipation:

Hefty watch (four links removed):
That dial:

If a customer then wants a higher limited number he might have to wait for it.
I was told they don’t produce according to number.
Having ordered a relatively low number it could have been delivered by now. So it would suggest production is indeed not based on number.I assume it is according to date of order. In which case mine should arrive next week.
However, no news whatsoever. -

Of course I already followed up on the status of my order.
The answer was that watches are not being produced according to number.
According to what else remains unclear. I assume it will be date of order. In any case, they told me that they would contact me as soon as the watch was out of production.
To me it seems strange. I mean, when a company intends to put out a limited series then you already know the exact number of watches to produce. I would expect Sinn would make sure to have a buffer ready.
But I’m not the expert here, obviously.Nothing I can do is wait. Really hope it’ll arrive before my birthday end of the month.
